Career Goals – What IS Career Success to You?

Some Brief Career Help: A Question for You to Answer

How do you define “career success“?  Here’s a quick tip I learned from Coach Thomas Leonard during my coach training.

To fully identify your career goals, and define what career success would mean to you, you need the career skill of goal clarity, or the ability to clarify your career goals.

We aim to help you be a true career professional.  And one of the marks of a professional is clarity about what they are doing.

All too often we chase job opportunities, perhaps trying to make a career transition(e.g. change your career, perhaps to a totally different field), experience career advancement or greater job satisfaction, but not being focused on what the goal is and the fastest way to achieve it.  And at the end of working for years at a place we don’t like in a job we aren’t excited about, we look back and realize we’ve been working hard to climb a career ladder going to the wrong place.

So do yourself a favor, accept a little career guidance here, and answer a seemingly simple question that can change your life.  It is vital if you want to find that dream job, or at least find the right job, as well as identifying what job satisfaction would mean to you.

Ready for it?

I’ll know I am successful in my career when _______________________________.

I’ll know I am successful in my career when _______________________________.

I’ll know I am successful in my career when _______________________________.

Answer that three times and you’ll be on your way to clarity.  Sounds simple I know, but try it. And be very specific.

For example, I’ll know I am successful in my career when I wake up every morning feeling excited about the projects I have planned for that day.

I’ll know I am successful in my career when I see myself using the gifts God has given me most of every workday and NOT trying to use gifts I don’t have.

Ok? Try it.
